Watch the batter running down the first-base line very carefully:
Official rule of baseball, 6.05(g): A batter is out when his fair ball touches him before touching a fielder.
There's no addendum for what to do when said fair ball hits the batter in a hilarious manner. Though the umpire may not have been acting in accordance with the official rules of the game, letting the batter get back in the box was the compassionate thing to do after everyone at the game laughed at him. That was sort of cold, parents. I know the ball hit him in the helmet, but you'd at least think somebody would have tossed in a concerned "oooh" or something of that ilk.
