Jim Caldwell is ?tickled? to be working with Joe Flacco

We're not sure how the normally stoic Jim Caldwell reacts when he's "tickled," but rest assured that the former Indianapolis Colts head coach and current Baltimore Ravens quarterback guru feels just that way, now that he's working with Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, and with a perennial playoff contender.

"I am tickled to death." Caldwell told the team's official website on Monday, "Just to have an opportunity to see how things are done here in a great organization with outstanding coaches and obviously great players that have certainly been one of the paragons of this league."

Caldwell was the Colts' quarterbacks coach from 2002 through 2008 before replacing Tony Dungy as the team's head coach. He deserves some credit for the development of Peyton Manning, though the "set it and forget it" nature of Manning's excellence, and Manning's longtime relationship with offensive coordinator Tom Moore, had some wondering just how much. In any case, Caldwell is now tasked with the development of Flacco, a rocket-armed quarterback who came under fire from his own teammates before and after the Ravens were eliminated by the New England Patriots in the AFC championship game.

"They had a lot of guys in the box on him and they were giving [the pass] to him," safety Ed Reed told SIRIUS NFL Radio. "I think a couple of times he needed to get rid of the ball. It just didn't look like he had a hold on the offense. I don't know how much of [that was] the play-calling ? but it just didn't look like he had a hold on the offense, you know, of times past ? It was just kind of like they [were] telling him [what] to do -- throw the ball or get it here, you know, get it to certain guys."

By the way, this was after the Ravens beat the Houston Texans in the divisional round.

But as we pointed out, the conservative nature of Baltimore's offense did Flacco no favors. Per Football Outsiders' game charting, the Ravens led the NFL in two-receiver sets by a fairly wide margin in 2011, and none of their receivers -- save young speedster Torrey Smith -- was capable of beating man coverage at the line or stretching the field.

Caldwell won't necessarily have veto power over the schemes put in place by offensive coordinator Cam Cameron (much to the dismay of many Ravens fans), but he can take the tools Flacco has and make them more effective.

"Everybody's different," Caldwell said on Tuesday. "[Flacco] has his own strengths, and what we want to try to do is accentuate those. I'm not here to try to make him like any other quarterback in this league, like Peyton Manning or Brad Johnson or the other guys I've coached. That's not my goal. He is who he is. What we want to do is just help him perfect what he does well."

And what does he do well? According to Caldwell, you can start with his consistency.

"Joe's been able to show it for four years. He's continued to get better and lead his team to the playoffs. That's consistency. Every once in a while you will find a quarterback that will have one outstanding year and that's it. Every once in a while you'll find one that has two pretty good years. And that's it for their entire career. The individuals that can string them back to back to back to back and continue, that's what you look for in terms of performing at a very high level."

Caldwell had Flacco scouted to a degree through several meetings between Baltimore's current and former teams in recent years. "We knew he was dangerous because we knew he could make all the throws," the coach said. "He could make all the finesse throws, all the intermediate throws, and under duress. He's a tough guy to handle."

Flacco can indeed make all those throws, but to paraphrase Ricky Watters ... To who? And for what? After a decade of Manning excellence, Caldwell will have to solve those riddles for a team desperate to avenge a series of disappointing playoff losses in recent years. The franchise's first Super Bowl berth since the 2000 season could ride on Caldwell's ability to do so.

Video: French TV car hits a cyclist during Tour de France

A French television car swerved into a competitor during Sunday's stage of the Tour de France, sending the cyclist into a fellow rider and causing a spectacular crash that miraculously left neither rider seriously injured.

Juan Antonio Flecha was riding alongside Johnny Hoogerland during Stage 9 of the race when a French TV car swerved into him. The accelerating car clipped Flecha, who then ran into Hoogerland. Flecha fell on the pavement and Hoogerland flipped over his bike into a barbed wire fence.

Sporting only a few deep cuts and ripped jerseys, Flecha and Hoogerland quickly got back on their bikes and continued the stage, finishing in 136th and 139th place, respectively.

"I did what felt like a few somersaults," Hoogerland said."I don't know where the car came from. Before I knew it, Flecha was on the ground and there was nothing I could do.We can still be happy that we're alive."

The Dutchman went to a hospital and was expected to receive 30 stitches on his left thigh. A spokesman for Flecha's team said it's not certain whether he'll be able to continue the race of Monday.

After the stage was complete, both riders were awarded a prize given to the day's most combative riders.

Cruz: Manningham?s Super catch wasn?t drawn up that way

The biggest play of the Super Bowl wasn't drawn up that way.

Victor Cruz was standing in the slot on his own 12-yard line with 3:46 left in the game and his New York Giants trailing 17-15. To Cruz's right was wide receiver Hakeem Nicks and on the near side was Mario Manningham. The play called for Cruz to run a 12-yard route fromthe slot, and then he'd break into the middle of the field.

It was a play that should have worked against a New England Patriots defense that was lined up in a two-high shell with two safeties on either side of the field. The ball was supposed to go to Cruz, who had a first-quarter touchdown catch and was the favored target of quarterback Eli Manning throughout the season.

Even though the call was for Cruz to be Manning's first read on the play, the pass never went his direction. Instead, the ball went to Manningham on the opposite side for a 38-yard clutch catch that has become one of the iconic moments in Super Bowl history.

[Related: The hidden play of Super Bowl XLVI: Tom Brady's injury revealed]

"I saw the whole thing - as soon as I turned I saw the ball and tracked it and I saw his feet go down," Cruz told Yahoo! Sports. "He was supposed to come to my side, but I feel like Eli wanted to make a play, so he looked off the safety to the right and threw an absolutely perfect pass to Mario."

Cruz had perhaps the best view of the play as he turned during his route -- he immediately knew it was a catch given his vantage point. As if that wasn't enough, the way Manningham bounced up after being pushed out of bounds told Cruz that the Giants had made the play.He admitted that waiting for the officials to confirm the catch was an excruciating process.

When the Giants returned to their huddle with the first down, they sensedmomentum was intheir favor.

"He [Manning] didn't say anything in the huddle, but I think you could feel it. Once you have a big play like that, it really pumps up the offense," Cruz said. "We [did] some good things on that drive, really moving the ball. But to have a big play like that, it was great for our confidence, great for our morale."

[ Related: Giants can thank unlikely Super Bowl hero for win ]

Now Cruz enters the offseason after what was unquestionably the breakout performance of 2011. He played just three games in 2010 before a hamstring injury sidelined him and he failed to make a single catch in his rookie season. But in 2011, Cruz led the Giants with 82 catches for 1,536 yards along with nine touchdowns.

An undrafted rookie free agent out of FCS program UMass, Cruz is among the lowest-paid players on the Giants roster.

His stellar sophomore season in the league stacked against his pay ? Cruz is slated to make $490,000 in 2012 ? was a big reason why he won the Vizio Top Performer Award for outperforming his contract. The Vizio award is given to a player who outperforms his current contract and he beat out nominees such as Matt Forte and Rob Gronkowsi for the honor.

Though his contract runs out next year, Cruz is hopeful that he will commit to the Giants with a long-term deal this offseason.

"I just want to have my agents and everybody take care of the stuff, but I definitely want to remain a New York Giant for a very long time. Hopefully we can just go into the offseason and my agents make the right decisions and come to some kind of an agreement," Cruz said.

"I'm willing to wait, but that's something my agents are going to have to take care of."

From an injury-plagued rookie year where he failed to make an impact to winning a Super Bowl and now a possible big contract, it has been quite the year for Cruz. His post-touchdown salsa dance celebration has become a hit and now he's a bit of a pop icon. It could be too much, too soon for some young players, but Cruz credits Manning and teammate Justin Tuck for helping to keep him levelheaded.

[Related: Justin Tuck visits New York City cop who survived gunshot wound to head]

Cruz even turned down "Dancing With the Stars" this offseason, choosing rather to focus on football. It isn't about the exposure and money, he says.

"When you were young and you just played this game for the love of it ? it wasn't for the money or anything like that. I play this game for the love of it. I knew coming into this league that I was going to have to earn my keep and really make the team and do all the right things. I understand that and I understood that I have to go out there and take care of what I can take care of," Cruz said.

"And the contracts and everything else will take care of itself."

Michael Jackson Doctor Can't Afford Lawyer For Appeal

Conrad Murray asks judge for a court-appointed attorney to appeal his involuntary manslaughter conviction.

Just weeks after being sent to jail for four years following a conviction on a felony involuntary manslaughter charge in the death of Michael Jackson, cardiologist Conrad Murray is throwing himself on the mercy of the court. The doctor had been slated to earn up to $150,000 a month to act as Jackson's personal physician before the pop icon's death in June 2009 from an overdose of the Murray-administered surgical anesthetic propofol. But on Tuesday E! News reported that Murray filed a notice of appeal in Los Angeles Superior Court in which he claimed that he is "indigent and respectfully requests the appointment of counsel on appeal." Murray, 58, is planning to appeal both his conviction and his sentence, but has not yet filed papers with the California Appeals Court. He had hired two lawyers to handle his manslaughter case, but is now seeking attorneys with appeal experience. One of those former lawyers, J. Michael Flanagan, told E! that he was shocked at how his client is being treated in jail. "It is crazy and unbelievable how [the sheriffs] are treating" Murray in jail, said Flanagan, who claimed he waited over an hour to see Murray, who was brought out in handcuffs and leg chains. Flanagan was further shocked to see Murray handcuffed to the table for their meeting, something the lawyer said he'd never seen before in the case of a low-level, non-violent offender. Charles Peckham, who is handling civil cases against Murray, told the Associated Press that his client is under tight security and isolation that is more intense than other inmates at the Los Angeles Men's Central Jail. "Treating him like Hannibal Lecter is offensive," said Peckham. "This man who saved lives made a mistake, and they're going to [make] him pay like a mass-murderer." Sheriff's officials defended the tight security, saying it was for Murray's safety.

Video: Three-time Tour champion punches fan during race

We at Yahoo! Sports adhere to the time-honored "keep your hands to yourself" policy. Exceptions can be made, however, like in Friday's stage of the Tour de France when a fool dressed as a doctor and holding a blood bag got too close to three-time race winner Alberto Contador during the middle of the race:

Contador failed a drug test last year, hence the nuanced heckling from the man. (It would have been funnier if he held upa piece offilet mignon.)

If people are going to get that close to riders, they deserve to get pushed out of the way. Frankly, it's always amazed me how close fans can get to the cyclists during those uphill stages. Even the people who weren't being jerks and running on the course were still awfully close to getting run over by Contador's bike.

The Spaniard finished the day in sixth place overall.

Only dance can heal the wounded souls of Matt Light and Rob Gronkowski

The best story about post-Super Bowl heartache is this one: Dan Wetzel captures Tom Brady's pain immediately after losing again to the Giants. The second-best story about post-Super Bowl heartache is this one: Matt Light and Rob Gronkowski taking their shirts off and dancing their hearts out after the game.

The lesson here? When you are fiesta, you are always fiesta. Bigger pictures to follow.

According to Deadspin, these pictures were taken at the invite-only Patriots postgame party. LMFAO was there, as were Maroon 5, Steven Tyler and Earth, Wind & Fire. It actually doesn't look like a much different atmosphere than the one on the Giants team plane. It really is a fine line between winning and losing.

I can see some people getting bent out of shape over this, because some fans want the players to take the losses as hard as they do. But not everyone is this girl. Sadness and disappointment can find many different outlets.

I assure you, Matt Light, Rob Gronkowski and anyone else who danced at the Patriots party are competitors. They didn't give less effort than anyone else, and they are not less reliable in the future. They just chose to distract themselves from the sadness with a party and some shirtless gyrating. Matt Light might not get that opportunity very often.

Sometimes, dancing is the only way to get the pain out.

Many thanks, Deadspin.

Marlins agree to unretire No. 5 for Logan Morrison, who will honor his father?s favorite player

You might be thinking what I was thinking when I first saw Logan Morrison's tweets on Saturday afternoon announcing his switch to his team's retired No. 5: The Miami Marlins retired a number other than Jackie Robinson's No. 42? How did I miss that?

Well, the Marlins actually retired the No. 5 prior to their inaugural season when the team's first president, Carl Barger, passed away unexpectedly during the 1992 Winter Meetings in Louisville.

Barger had grown up a big fan of the Yankees' Joe DiMaggio, so the decision was made almost immediately to retire DiMaggio's number in his honor. That ceremony took place before their first game on April 5, 1993.

Now, 19 years later, the number will officially come out of retirement in the Marlins home opener against the St. Louis Cardinals on April 4. A plaque honoring Barger will take its place in the new Marlins Ballpark.

"I understand what an honor it is to have a number unretired," Morrison said via Twitter. "I want to thank Mr. Loria and the Marlins for making it happen."

"I also promise to wear the number with great pride and continue to honor Mr. Barger and his family."

As it turns out, Morrison also had a tribute in mind when he requested the number change. His father, Tom, who passed away after a battle with lung cancer in the December 2010, was a big supporter of George Brett, and often encouraged Logan to emulate the Kansas City Royals Hall of Famer. Now Morrison is one step closer to doing just that, while also honoring the memory of his dad.

It's also worth noting that according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Miami was willing to grant Albert Pujols permission to wear No. 5 as a concession to help lure him to South Beach. If that's indeed the case, it's nice to see them now making this concession for one of their own so that he can pay a simple, but meaningful tribute.

Why Is This News 34--Spring Training Swing Part 1: Florida!

It's almost spring, and that means it's a season of rebirth, a time when green cathedrals reopen anew, a time when the verdant promises of a nascent baseball season cause sportswriters to break out in fits of romantic claptrap like this. And we're no exception; we love spring training even as it becomes ever more like everything else in sports: overpriced and overmarketed.

Still, that didn't stop our very own Kevin Kaduk from hitting Florida for the first half of Big League Stew's Spring Swing roundup. And today, he brings us back tales from his journey, including:

? Which (surprising) team had the friendliest players;

? Why it's sometimes advisable to take a picture while driving in traffic;

? How Kaduk was put in an extremely awkward position with not-so-Fat Joe Blanton;

? The best places to eat when in Tampa and various other locales; and

? Why you should never go get autographs from major league ballplayers after a certain age.

It's good stuff, and we'll have Part 2 after Kaduk returns from Arizona next week. Enjoy.

After injury, Ballard tests leg on sideline and collapses in pain (video)

Early in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLVI, New York Giants tight end Jake Ballard suffered a left knee injury on a play away the ball. He was brought off the field by trainers, but, this being the biggest game of his career, he wanted back in the game.

To test out the balky knee and show coaches he was able to play, Ballard engaged in a full sprint on the Giants sideline. It did not end well. Ballard took a few strides before running into a member of team personnel and collapsed to the ground in pain.

Ballard wouldn't return to the game, but did get some good news when it was revealed that the meniscus damage he suffered was not serious.

He was in the locker room when Ahmad Bradshaw scored his game-winning touchdown. He demanded that medical personnel cart him back out to the field so he could celebrate with his teammates. They obliged.

Video: Canadian sports anchor wins $2.5 million lottery on live TV

Vancouver sportscaster Barry Deley was shopping for groceries when he got a call from his Global News co-worker Squire Barnes, who was live on television anchoring coverage of the grand prize drawing in the BC Children's Hospital Dream Lottery. The winning ticket had just been selected from amongst 288,000 entries and, lo and behold, it bore the name "Barry Deley."

Watch as Barnes and co-anchor Sophie Lui realize that their co-worker was the winner of the drawing, call him on live television and then try to act like they're not a little jealous that the guy delivering daily reports on the Canucks just won his choice of a $2.5 million country estate or $2 million in cash.

There were 288,000 tickets for sale in the lottery, ranging in price from $25 to $33. Over 3,000 prizes were awarded, ranging from $50 gas gift cards to earthquake disaster kits to 2012 BMWs. Deley's was, of course, the biggest.

The total sale of tickets brought in $9 million for the hospital. Taking out the $3.3 million in prizes, the hospital would stand to net more than $5 million from the raffle.

If you were like Deley and wondering whether it was "fishy" that he won, the official raffle rules state that only employees of the hospital and the official auditors were ineligible to enter. Deley purchased his tickets like everyone else.

Why Is This News 39: Deadspin?s Drew Magary on his new novel

Why Is This News 39: Deadspin?s Drew Magary on his new novelSuppose they figured out a cure for aging. You could still die, sure, but you'd never grow old. Sweet deal, right? Yeah ... until you realize things like the fact that you can never, ever quit your job. And oh, it could get worse. Much, much worse.

That's the premise of "The Postmortal," the new novel by Drew Magary. Long known as one of the key voices behind Deadspin and Kissing Suzy Kolber, Drew joins us on the latest podcast to talk about the book, the trap of sportswriting, the joys of writing articles that inspire murderous emails (turns out people get upset when you bust on Charlie Brown, link NSFW), and oh so much more. It's fun stuff, though there may be a bad word or two dropped along the way, so don't play this one at your church youth group or anything.

Oh, and be sure to check out Drew's Tumblr for all kinds of ways to get hold of the book. Highly recommended.

Sanchez Vicario says she has nothing left from $60 million in career earnings

In the 1990s, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario was the clay court queen of tennis, winning four Grand Slams and accumulating more than $60 million in earnings and endorsements. Today, the former world No. 1 says she has "nothing," the result of years of financial mismanagement by her mother and father.

Sanchez Vicariosays her father put her on a strict budget during her career. She received a monthly allowance and assumed the rest was being invested.

As she claims in a new autobiography, excerpts of which were published this last weekend in the Spanish newspaper El Mundo, that's not what happened.

"My parents left me with nothing and now I am indebted to the [tax authorities] and I will not be quiet," she wrote. "My properties are worth a lot less than those of my brother Javier, who has earned a lot less than me. [?] I never questioned the way my father managed my money. I have been a victim, I was duped."

Sanchez Vicario says she is estranged from her immediate family.

Her mother denies the claims made in the book. Marisa Vicario Rubio told El Mundo that her daughter's claims are "lies."

"We never took advantage of Arantxa and under no circumstances is she broke," she said.

Does Billy Beane?s contract extension signal an optimistic dawn for Oakland fans?

Admittedly it's a little weird to use a word like "dawn" when you're talking about a general manager that has held his position since 1998 and ranks among the most tenured front-office men in baseball.

But with Billy Beane reportedly finalizing an extension that would keep him running the Oakland Athletics through 2019, the media and fan buzz around the Bay Area has an optimistic bent. The thinking is that there's no way that Beane would sign on for that long if owner Lew Wolff wasn't close to securing his prized stadium deal over in San Jose.

Writes Susan Slusser in the SF Chronicle:

Such [a lengthy extension points] to further optimism in the A's upper ranks about the team's chances of getting approval for a new stadium in San Jose. Considering how publicly frustrated Beane has been about the limitations of the Coliseum, both in terms of attracting free agents and in terms of income generated, I cannot imagine him staying with the club that long without a good idea that a new stadium is on the horizon.

Indeed, with a new stadium in place, the thinking is that Wolff will end his tantrum and ease up on the financial death grip that led Beane to trade players like Trevor Cahill, Gio Gonzalez and Andrew Bailey this offseason. A new home might not catapult the A's into large-market status but it should definitely stop the team from walking around with a tin cup while doing a lesser-publicized version of the retro Florida Marlins act.

Of course, with Beane's recent track record one wonders how fired up A's fans can really be about him sticking around for this entire decade. After all, the sheen of "Moneyball" exists only in the minds of Oscar voters and it's going to take a lot to make people forget about the misstep of trading Carlos Gonzalez for a half-season of Matt Holliday. Also, as SB Nation's Rob Neyer notes, Beane's 4 percent ownership stake means that he could be sticking around for more than just the removal of a competitive handicap.

Neyer also asks if this deal means that Beane will be an Athletic for life and I can't really see it meaning anything else. For better or worse, the on-field successes of Moneyball in the early 2000s ? and Beane's ensuing rejection of the Red Sox ? ensured a lengthy relationship between the two sides. Beane isn't going anywhere, nor should he be. It's impossible to separate the franchise from the architect at this point.

At the same time, I can't look at this deal and automatically assume that Billy Beane plus a bigger budget equals guaranteed success. The real victory of such an extension is that it signifies the franchise can stop spinning its wheels and finally get into a position where it can sink or swim. Beane and the A's could fail just as easily in a new home in San Jose, but at least it won't be the product of self-sabotage. It's a sad indictment of the past few years in Oakland, but that will count as progress.

It will count as a reason for hope.
